Our next Ford on the Road adventure takes us to the beautiful upper ridge of the valley to catch Diavolo | Architecture in Motion’s epic US premiere L’Espace du Temps at the Valley Performing Arts Center (VPAC)! To help you plan your trip, VPAC Program and Artistic Administrator Justin Souza shared his favorite things to do in the Northridge area. Take a look!
What’s your favorite area to take a stroll?
I love hiking the trails along the North Rim of the Valley above Granada Hills. With stunning views and a variety of 5 mile hikes, O’Melveny Park is one of the most popular spots in the area – just watch out for rattlesnakes! And, if you look closely right before the final upward stretch to the top, there is a tree with a wooden box that is filled with letters from other visitors. You can even write a note of your own!
Where’s the best place for a pre- or post-show libation and meal?
Taps Valley Gastropub is a local favorite that serves up refreshing brews and savory bar snacks, burgers and tacos. While there, you may want to try these favorites: comforting Fried Mac and Cheese, the flavorful Sweater Burger (a beef patty topped with bacon, cheddar, BBQ sauce, jalapeños and a big onion ring—likely called “sweater” because of the spiciness!), and their refreshing Fish Tacos. Bonus: parking is easily accessible and free!
Where’s the best place to grab dessert?
Not only does this place have amazing milkshakes and fast food, you can enjoy it on the go! Known for its drive thru, Frosty Queen offers pretty much anything imaginable that would satisfy a sweet tooth or comfort food craving. You should definitely try one of their milkshakes or dipped ice cream cones!
Are there any fun family activities you would recommend? Skateland is an old school staking rink that’s been around for over 50 years. The rink is spacious and they often have live DJs and even skating lessons for all ages. It’s a really fun, unique place!
What your favorite local business?
Joe’s Café in Granada Hills is a real gem. They use all local ingredients and make their own spin on favorite comfort foods. I really liked their French toast – they stuff it with strawberries and cream cheese. They also have a smoked gouda sandwich that is phenomenal. Their homemade jams and pretzel bread are delicious – the watermelon jam is my favorite!
